Types of FT Floor Scrubber

Walk-Behind Scrubber

This model of scrubber comes in many sizes but is usually made for areas that are 1,000 to 15,000 square feet in size. The operator walks behind the scrubber, directing it as they go. This is a great model for large open areas but will not work in small, confined spaces.

Ride Automatic Scrubber

These are the biggest model of scrubber and they usually come in sizes that are made for square footage. You can get 15,000-40,000 square foot, 25,000-50,000 square foot models, or 50,000-150,000 square foot models. These are not going to be used in any non-industrial space or where there is furniture to navigate around.

Two Scrubbing Methods of Floor Scrubbers

Cylindrical Scrubbers

Cylindrical scrubbers operate using two tube shaped brushes placed parallel to one another: one in front and one in the rear. The front brush rotates forward while the rear brush rotates backward, and the front brush scrubs while the rear brush picks up small debris and throws it into a hopper situated behind the scrub head. Most industrial floor scrubbers have weep holes in the hopper that allow extra water to drain back out onto the floor where the scrubber’s squeegee directs it to the collection reservoir.

  • Sweep while scrubbing
  • Watering system leads to reduced dust in the air while sweeping
  • RPM + 700
  • Motor-driven brushes
  • More adept at cleaning grooves and grout lines

Disc Scrubbers

Disc scrubbers use two flat pads with brushes that spin horizontally on the surface of the floor. In this method, water is dispensed in the center of the two discs which turn at approximately 300 RPM. This type of power scrubber technology delivers a great clean without the debris collection.

  • Higher down pressure
  • Useful for removing thick build-up
  • Pad driver capability for polishing and buffing
  • Average RPM around 300
  • Gear-driven brushes
  • Gimble mounted for uneven floors

Hygienic Zoning and Pathogen Migration
Do: Implement hygienic zoning policies to separate different processing areas within your facility. Consider transition areas between zones and ensure that cross-contamination prevention measures are strictly maintained. These are critical points for managing pathogen loads in plants.
Don’t: Underestimate the risk of pathogen migration from Zones 3 and 4 (storage areas) to Zone 1. Even with robust zoning practices, pathogens can infiltrate clean zones if floor scrubbers are left dirty and uncared for.

Chemicals and Cleaning Practices
Do: Use appropriate cleaning chemicals and follow recommended procedures. Incorrect chemistries can compromise the effectiveness of floor scrubbers and potentially damage floor scrubber parts.
Don’t: Neglect messes such as drain backups. These can turn floor scrubbers into significant vectors for contamination.

Floor Condition and Facility Design
Do: Regularly assess the condition of your facility’s floors. Subpar floor conditions, like cracks, can harbor dangerous pathogens. Without a proper chemistry and procedure, these harborages can become cross contamination points. Normally even floor scrubbers can’t reach deep into the crack.
Don’t: Let floor conditions deteriorate to the point where cross-contamination is commonplace.

Diligence and Risk Considerations
Do: Be diligent in program development. Regularly review and update sanitation protocols.
Don’t: Assume that the underlying issue is always external. Sometimes, our own actions and equipment contribute to contamination risks.

Applications of FT Floor Scrubber

Commercial Scenarios
The commercial sector is one of the main applications for floor cleaning machines. Whether in retail stores, office buildings or hotels, floor scrubbers facilitate the maintenance of high standards of cleanliness. Their ability to clean dirt makes the cleaning process more efficient, and they are also suitable for larger open spaces, providing a comfortable and tidy environment in commercial premises.

Industrial Scenarios
Floor cleaning machines also play a key role in industrial environments. The cleaning of large floor areas in factories, warehouses and production facilities is vital to maintaining productivity, and floor scrubbers ensure that floors in industrial locations are always clean through powerful vacuuming, advanced navigation technology and the ability to remove oil from the shop floor.

Medical Scenarios
In the healthcare industry, where floor cleaning is essential to prevent cross-contamination and maintain hygiene, floor scrubbers provide superior cleaning solutions for hospitals and clinics through efficient disinfection functions and intelligent navigation systems.

Customizable Pad Types for Floor Scrubbers

White
White pads are also called “white polishing pads” because they’re the softest and least aggressive. They help remove dirt and soft scuff marks with light pressure for minimal dulling of the floor finish. In general, white pads are used to clean and polish delicate floors that you don’t want to scratch, such as waxed or high-gloss floors. This makes them ideal for marble, terrazzo, VCT, and wax floors.

Red
Red pads are the most common pad type and are used for general, everyday cleaning. Red pads are mildly-aggressive and great for removing stains and scuff marks. Generally, red cleaning pads won’t damage flooring unless used on one spot for too long.

Blue
Blue pads are more aggressive than red pads and thus better for tougher stains. They’re generally used for heavy-duty scrubbing and top-coat removal before recoating.

Green
Also called “green turf pads,” green pads are used for taking off the top coat of finished floors without stripping them.

Black
Black pads are the most aggressive brush type. They’re used for cleaning heavily-soiled floors, stripping finish (with the addition of a stripping solvent), and removing tough stains from concrete.

FAQ

Q: Do floor scrubbers really work?

A: Yes, a scrubber is an excellent cleaning machine, especially for hard floors. It efficiently removes dirt, grime, and stains, making it ideal for commercial spaces, warehouses, and areas needing deep cleaning.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a floor scrubber?

A: While the lifespan of a floor scrubber can vary based on the factors above, it's reasonable to expect 5 to 10 years of reliable, efficient operation. A well-maintained, high-quality scrubber used in moderate conditions can often exceed this range, delivering effective cleaning for a decade or more.

Q: Do you have to sweep before using a floor scrubber?

A: Sweep, Vacuum & Dust The Area: Before you begin scrubbing it can help to do an initial cleaning with a vacuum cleaner as well as sweep and dust the area you are going to be scrubbing. This can remove excess loose dirt that is sitting on top of the surfaces you plan to clean.

Q: Do you put soap in a floor scrubber?

A: Pro Tip: Use low-foaming detergent designed for floor scrubbers to mitigate suds rising up into the vac motor. Also, put the water in first, followed by the detergent. If possible, for maximum efficiency, start cleaning in the corner furthest away from the door and work your way back to the door.

Q: What is the difference between a floor scrubber and a floor polisher?

A: Floor polishers run faster than floor scrubbers, normally somewhere in the vicinity of 400 RPM. This is because they aren't designed to clean in the same manner that scrubbers do but provide floors with a glossy and polished look.

Q: What safety precautions should you take when using a floor scrubber?

A: Read the Manual
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Inspect the Equipment Before Use.
Ensure Proper Training
Clear the Area Before Cleaning
Use Caution on Wet Floors
Monitor the Cleaning Process
Turn Off and Secure the Machine After Use.
