Hey friends! Today I'm going to introduce you to forklifts, machines that are very common in warehouses and industrial sectors.
First, a forklift is a tool used for moving and stacking goods. It's like a huge mechanical elephant, with a strong body and agile movements.
At the front of the forklift is a pair of metal forks that can move up and down via a lifting device, allowing it to easily grab goods. Forklifts are incredibly powerful, easily handling heavy objects. They frequently shuttle through warehouses and logistics centers, moving goods from one place to another. For example, in a huge warehouse, thousands of goods are stacked high on shelves, a height almost impossible for humans to reach. But for a forklift, this is a piece of cake. They can raise their forks, easily removing goods from one shelf and placing them on another, fully utilizing their mechanical strength.
Combustion-powered forklifts and electric forklifts are two different types of forklifts, and they differ in the following ways. What are these differences?
Differences between Combustion and Electric Forklifts
01 Let's start with their most basic driving method:
While neither type of forklift requires human power, their driving methods are completely different. Electric forklifts use batteries as their power source, moving by electricity.
Internal combustion forklifts use fuel (such as gasoline, diesel, or liquefied petroleum gas) as their power source.
Due to the different driving methods, the noise levels differ. Electric forklifts are quieter because they are electrically driven, producing less noise. Internal combustion forklifts, on the other hand, are noisier due to the roar of their internal combustion engines.
02 Let's look at their ease of use:
Electric forklifts have shorter range than internal combustion forklifts. When an electric forklift runs out of power, it requires a long charging period before it can be used again. Internal combustion forklifts, however, can be refueled immediately after refueling and put back into use.
03. There's also a difference in battery life. Internal combustion forklifts have a better battery life than electric forklifts, especially in cold conditions. When temperatures are very low, the battery capacity of an electric forklift may not reach 100%, while this isn't a problem for internal combustion forklifts.
What are the classifications of forklifts?
Forklifts can generally be divided into three main categories: internal combustion forklifts, electric forklifts, and warehouse forklifts.
Internal Combustion Forklifts
Internal combustion forklifts are further divided into standard internal combustion forklifts, heavy-duty forklifts, container forklifts, and sidecar forklifts.
01. Internal Combustion Forklifts
These generally use diesel, gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas, or natural gas engines as power. Standard internal combustion forklifts have the ability to move and lift goods, and can carry different weights of goods depending on the model and specifications. Load capacity ranges from 1.2 to 8.0 tons, and the operating aisle width is generally 3.5 to 5.0 meters. Considering exhaust emissions and noise issues, they are typically used outdoors, in workshops, or other locations where exhaust emissions and noise are not particularly critical. Because of convenient refueling, they can operate continuously for extended periods and are capable of working in harsh environments (such as rainy weather).
02 Heavy-duty forklifts: Powered by diesel engines, these are high-performance forklifts designed to handle larger and heavier loads. They typically have more powerful engines and higher load capacities, capable of carrying several tons or even more. Load capacity ranges from 10.0 to 52.0 tons. They are generally used in industrial sectors with heavy loads, such as ports, shipping, manufacturing, and heavy machinery. They play a crucial role in logistics and warehousing, enabling the rapid and efficient handling and stacking of heavy goods, improving productivity and throughput.
03 Container forklifts: Powered by diesel engines, also known as container handlers, these forklifts are specifically designed for handling and stacking containers. Load capacity ranges from 8.0 to 45.0 tons. They possess sufficient mobility and operational flexibility and are widely used in ports, logistics, and warehousing industries for loading and unloading containers, stacking containers, and supporting logistics transportation.
04 Side-Load Forklift Powered by a diesel engine, also known as a side-discharge forklift, this is a special type of forklift where the forks are mounted on the side of the forklift, not the front. Side-load forklifts are mainly used for handling long and heavy items, such as long timber, pipes, and steel. Load capacity: 3.0~6.0 tons. Compared to traditional forklifts, the forks of a side-load forklift extend to the side, allowing for side-loading of goods in narrow aisles without turning or backing up. Widely used in timber processing, the steel industry, warehousing and logistics, and construction sites where long goods need to be handled.
Electric Forklift An electric forklift is a forklift that uses batteries or an electric motor as its power source. Compared to fuel-powered forklifts, it is more environmentally friendly and quieter, using batteries as its energy source. Load capacity: 1.0~8.0 tons, with an operating aisle width typically of 3.5~5.0 meters. It's important to note that electric forklifts require charging, so battery management and charging schedules are necessary during operation. The runtime of an electric forklift is also affected by battery capacity and usage conditions, so it's necessary to select an appropriate battery capacity based on specific needs.
In general, electric forklifts are environmentally friendly, economical, and efficient material handling tools suitable for indoor use. They are widely used in warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing, contributing to improved work efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
01 Forklift Warehouse Trucks
Warehouse forklifts are primarily designed for handling goods within warehouses. Except for a few (such as manual pallet forklifts) that are manually driven, most are electric motor-driven, widely used in the warehousing industry due to their compact size, maneuverability, light weight, and environmental friendliness. For multi-shift operations, electric warehouse forklifts require spare batteries.
02 Pallet Trucks
Electric pallet trucks are one of the most common and widely used types of electric forklifts. They are suitable for handling and stacking goods on pallets, enabling fast and efficient material handling in warehouses. With a load capacity of 1.6~3.0 tons, an operating aisle width of 2.3~2.8 meters, and a forklift lifting height of approximately 210mm, these pallet stackers are primarily used for horizontal handling and loading/unloading goods within warehouses. They offer three operating modes: walk-on, stand-on, and seated, allowing selection based on efficiency requirements.
03. Pallet Stackers: Electric pallet stackers come in two types: fully electric and semi-electric. As the name suggests, the former is electrically controlled for both driving and lifting, requiring less manual labor. The latter requires manual pulling or pushing, while lifting is electrically controlled.
With a load capacity of 1.0~2.5 tons and an operating aisle width of 2.3~2.8 meters, these stackers have a mast added to their structure compared to electric pallet trucks. The forklift lifting height is generally within 4.8 meters, and they are primarily used for stacking and loading/unloading goods within warehouses.
04. Reach Truck: With a load capacity of 1.0~2.5 tons, the mast can be moved forward or retracted as a whole. When retracted, the operating aisle width is generally 2.7~3.2 meters, and the maximum lifting height can reach approximately 11 meters. It is commonly used for medium-height stacking and picking operations in warehouses.
05. Electric Picking Truck: In some situations (such as supermarket distribution centers), it is not necessary to ship entire pallets. Instead, multiple types of goods are picked according to orders to form a pallet. This process is called picking. Based on the height of the picked goods, electric picking forklifts can be divided into low-level picking forklifts (within 2.5 meters) and medium-high-level picking forklifts (up to 10 meters). Load capacity: 2.0~2.5 tons (low-level), 1.0~1.2 tons (medium-high-level, with cab lifting).
06. Low-Level Ride Three-Way Stacker Forklift
Typically equipped with a three-way stacker head, the forklift does not require steering; simply rotating the forks allows for stacking and retrieving goods from both sides. The aisle width is 1.5-2.0 meters, and the lifting height can reach 12 meters. The forklift cab remains on the ground and cannot be raised. Due to limited visibility, it is primarily used for lifting heights below 6 meters.
07. High-Level Ride Three-Way Stacker Forklift
Similar to the low-level ride three-way stacker forklift, the high-level ride three-way stacker forklift also features a three-way stacker head. The aisle width is 1.5-2.0 meters, and the lifting height can reach 14.5 meters. Its cab can be raised, allowing the driver to clearly observe goods at any height and perform picking operations. The high-level ride three-way stacker forklift outperforms the low-level ride three-way stacker forklift in efficiency and various performance aspects, and therefore, this model is gradually replacing the low-level ride three-way stacker forklift.
08 Electric Tractor (Trailer) The tractor is driven by an electric motor, utilizing its towing capacity (3.0~25 tons) to pull several small carts loaded with goods. Main classifications include: electric tractors for airport logistics, electric tractors for workshops, small electric tractors, and electric tricycle tractors. They are frequently used for transporting large quantities of goods within or between workshops, such as transporting goods from warehouses to assembly lines in the automotive manufacturing industry, and baggage transport at airports.
